Dark Fiber

The internet is sometimes pinned as being such an amazing tool that holds endless opportunities, but it also has a very dark side that is often overlooked. In this week’s lecture we looked at Dark Fiber: hackers, botnets and cyberwar. It showed the dark sides of the internet which is often hidden. When something is posted on the internet it is there forever, even when it has been deleted. When sharing your personal information, it is easy for hackers to steal and take control of your various platforms that you have. Everyone’s surveillance and control over that information is vulnerable on the internet and subject to having your identity stolen.

The term sock puppets are known as a false online persona who seem like real people when they have entered an online discussion. This can be through social media chats, blogs etc. this includes the person holding multiple accounts and adding information onto the internet which holds fake news and spreads rumours. By having sock puppets, it can be dangerous for gathering information and statistics as they are lying about what they are saying. When you look for reviews you want to hear the truth about somewhere such as a restaurant. Often the owners will make several accounts to write good reviews in order for people to believe them and come and eat at their restaurant.

The internet is often a dark place that you need to always be careful on!
